‘Absolutely abhorrent stay. We booked for 4 nights at The Old Post Office through Sykes Cottages. After checking in on the Monday, we ended up leaving by the Wednesday. The property is in poor overall condition, has damp and mould problems and it had an ant infestation. We ended up losing around a further £50 in food, due to waking up and ants being all over it. Do not be fooled by the "nice" emails and texts you receive from the owner beforehand. They are clearly aware of the issues with the property before they began letting it and have chosen to ignore them. I am now trying to go through Sykes for a refund who said the owners had offered £50 as we had not given them time to rectify it. I'm not sure of anyone that can rectify damp, mould and infestations within a day. I am now waiting a further response from them. I have also spoken with my solicitor who have advised if I don't receive a refund to take them to small claims.’

‘We are just coming to the end of our week in the Old Post Office and we have really enjoyed it. The village of Down Thomas is quiet and rural, despite being only four miles or so from the city of Plymouth. This means you get the best of both worlds. There is a good local shop and pub a couple of minutes walk away in the village and another decent pub about 25 minutes walk down the lane. We actually had a walk to Plymouth one day, you can take the cliff path to Mount Batten then get the foot ferry. A taxi back in the evening was very reasonable. The house is comfy and cosy but not too small. Having two bathrooms makes it ideal for two couples/families and a teenager. Said teenager was pleased that the Wi-fi is faster than at home lol. All the bedrooms are a decent size, even the single. The kitchen is really well equipped and contains everything we’ve needed to make proper meals. The bonus is the garden which doesn’t appear on any of the website photos - it is a huge lawned area. It isn’t immediately obvious as you have to go through a courtyard and down a little path to get to it. The cottage was well priced (given that it is high season) and we are very happy with our decision to stay here.’

‘The house has a lovely feel and has been tastefully appointed. Lots of space and period features. The village is welcoming, pretty and has a nice shop, village shop, play area etc. The wooded walk to the beach at Mawgan Porth is around 45 minutes and is lovely. So many fabulous places to visit and walk. We loved our week and would come back. The only (small) criticism is that the owners seem to have ignored the many comments in the Guest Book asking for a hairdryer and to get the window latches/locks fixed. Both these things could be rectified easily but are irritating to a guest (especially one with teenagers who want to dry their hair!) For reference, the road outside is not busy and feels safe. Parking is easy. At 7-8am the noise of sporadic cars going past can be heard very clearly in the front bedrooms so I recommend you shut the windows. The loos are downstairs so this might not suit elderly family members.’

‘We had a wonderful time in The Old Post Office. The cottage is beautifully presented with character, good size rooms, an entire annex for the third bedroom (our eldest loved it) and a private enclosed garden. 1 minute walk away from the beautiful village of St Mawgan with a great friendly pub, village shop, playground etc. Pretty and quiet walk to Mawgan Porth. Very convenient for Newquay airport. We were there late March - early April so weather was mixed. So we spent some time on the lovely beaches nearby and some exploring Cornwall. Everything within an hour's drive.’

‘We loved our stay at the Old Post Office. The beds are fantastic and the sheets and bedding were on a par with a luxury hotel. The place is full of character and easily house 6 of us in three large double rooms. The size of the rooms gave us all our own space. The third bedroom has its own staircase and felt very private. The woodburner in the central lounge was lovely to sit around on a cooler day. We also managed to use the BBQ in the garden on a warmer evening. We really enjoyed visiting the pub down the road and popping to the local shop for breakfast supplied the next morning. As it only 5 minutes from Newquay airport it was super easy to get to. We hired a car and parked opposite the house which meant we had the choice to drive to Watergate Bay for lunch or could walk 40 minutes to Mawgan Porth to the beach. The owner had left lots of details of things to do and the kitchen was fully kitted out with coffee machine, lots of glassware and crockery. It definitely felt like a home from home and I would visit again.’

‘Would highly rate this cottage, it’s bright, airy and Spacious. With a great layout. Could do with updating a few things like the sofas but apart from that it’s excellent.’

‘We were both really impressed with The Old Post Office. First off, there was all the ingredients for a cream tea left for us on arrival - nice touch after a long journey. The house has been finished to a really high standard and we found loads of nice little touches here and there that made our overall stay pleasurable. Some things that stood out: The three double bedrooms all had lovely crisp cotton sheets and excellent pillows, I’ve never slept so well in rented accommodation! One of the bedrooms is accessed by its own staircase, which is via a snug. This is ideal if you are sharing with friends or older family members (like we were) who may want some quiet time away from the rest of the house. The kitchen is really well appointed, everything you need is there, including a wine cooler. The bathroom has a double shower as well as a bath, and there is also a separate toilet. The accommodation is literally 100 yards from The Falcon Inn, a lovely 16th century pub that does great food. I would highly recommend The Old Post Office for families or groups of friends who don’t mind sharing one bathroom.’
