Description

Melvich 4 miles. Originally a church, this stunning holiday home is situated in unspoilt countryside, four miles from Melvich, in the remote and beautiful north of Scotland. The church dates from 1837 and has been impressively transformed into a unique, spacious holiday property, ideal for any group who will appreciate its comfort and style, and embrace the opportunity to explore this dramatic region. This Melvich cottage has two large bedrooms both with en-suite facilities, as well as a luxurious family bathroom where guests will enjoy a peaceful soak at the end of a busy day. A mezzanine-style balcony, complete with chaise longue, makes a perfect, private reading area, whilst the open plan living area in this Highland holiday cottage, with its high ceilings and oak flooring, exudes style and quality. Doors from the living area in this cottage near Melvich open out to a private, rear patio garden where the only sound to be heard is that of birdsong. The little communities of Melvich and Portskerra are just a short drive away, whilst a journey further along this far north coastline will take you to the larger village of Durness, which is surrounded by wonderful mountain scenery and spectacular coastal views, as well as having fabulous sandy beaches and bays. For lovers of birdlife, a trip to the RSPB reserve in nearby Forsinard is a must, and for fisherman, Sutherland is a location hard to beat. This Melvich cottage is a very special place, offering a holiday to remember in a beautiful area of Scotland.
The village of Melvich is located on the north coast of Scotland near the mouth of the River Halladale and is set in the rolling and open space of Sutherland known as 'Mackay Country'. Melvich has a village shop and post office as well as a village inn with a restaurant. The village attracts many visitors, especially during the summer months, as it is an ideal base for touring the north coast of Scotland.

‘Lovely cottage, but ruined by the development directly opposite - a huge, wood-burning woodchip production plant. Noise, smoke and totally unsightly. Sadly with the wind being mostly from the west, it means the cottage was often cloaked in smoke, which made sitting outside impossible. Also, the road is very close and the timber lorries and quarry trucks caused a lot of alarm as they passed by at speed.’

‘We had a wonderful stay at the auld Kirk, beautiful scenery, lovely cottage inside and out. Couldn’t have asked for a more clean and welcoming place to stay! Mrs Morrison put some little books and a teddy for my youngest to read and play with also the frustration game which we had hours of fun playing with our eldest. Lovely weather too which helped!’

‘Former church beautifully renovated to a very high standard. Location is 4 miles from the coast in a lovely rural spot. Our children loved the house as we did. We were welcomed with freshly baked scones, jam and cream with a lovely bottle of red wine. The house is well equipped so great for cooking an evening meal, we took our own however plenty of tea, coffee etc All rooms are comfortable and spacious with loads of storage, all have TVs with sky tv and DVD players. House was spotless, there were 2 ensuite shower rooms and a large bathroom with a walk in shower. I would think this house would be good if you had mobility issues as the main bedroom is downstairs as is the main bathroom. This is an ideal location if you want to visit the north coast of Scotland, the beaches are amazing, plenty of fishing and great for cycling and walking. We only met Ronnie who owned the house as his wife was unfortunately in hospital, he is a gem and made us feel so welcome to his lovely part of Scotland. We would strongly recommend this house and hope to return one day.’

‘The Auld Kirk is located about 30 minutes from Thurso in far north Scotland. It is in rather an isolated spot (no wifi and only intermittent phone coverage at best) and although the view across the valley is quite nice, the closeness to an electricity sub station is a concern. The cottage itself has been nicely renovated and offers two decent sized bedrooms, both with lovely ensuites as well as a great family bathroom with a huge bath. The kitchen is well stocked (although the cutlery was a bit hard to find). The lounge is comfortable with a large TV, and there was a lovely welcome gift of a bottle of wine.’

‘The house is stunning inside, light, clean, spacious, luxurious. Outlook is also stunning towards the Highlands. We were so impressed with the position of the house and the interiors that would love to go back to it one day. The house is equipped so well, a pleasure to cook in the kitchen every night. It has 3 bathrooms and spacious bedrooms - simply luxurious like a hotel stay. We enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend. The owners are warm and friendly.’

‘We stayed here for a week and loved this place. It is a newly renovated church that has been done up to a really high standard. Really well insulated so we were warm and cosy as the winds blew outside. It is really spacious and lovely decor and has everything you need. Really lovely bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms. We felt so spoilt staying here. To top it off, the views from the windows of the cottage where beautiful and stunning as the cottage has picture perfect highland scenery all around. We would love to go back.’

‘A really lovely cottage with beautiful views all around. The cottage was spacious, a recently restored old church which was done up to a very high standard with lovely decor and superb bathrooms. We would love to come back here and we would highly recommend it. I really enjoyed the views and after a busy day I could sit on the sofa and had wonderful vistas through the windows both to my left and right. Such a great place to stay.’

‘Last week of July we stayed a week in the Auld Kirk. The house was spotless, the kitchen well appointed and the shower just great (altough we only used one out of three). Upon arrival there were scones waiting for us as well as a bottle of wine. The area the house is situated in is beautiful. There were flying a lot of birds although we did not see any merlins.’
