Description

A very well presented eight bedroom farmhouse set in attractive and generous grounds in close proximity to the burgh of Whithorn and the Isle of Whithorn. With the feel of an established country house, this fine property sleeps up to 17 people, making it ideal for large families and close friends. Tastefully furnished with both comfort and practicality in mind, Marl House is a pleasing 'home away from home' with plenty of room in which guests may spread out and feel immediately comfortable.
There are six bedrooms (one en-suite) and two additional bathrooms in the main body of the house. The two wings have a further bedroom and bathroom each, and there is a large downstairs wet room with shower, basin and wc. In addition there is a spacious sitting room with wood burning stove, a comfy TV room (which can be converted to a further twin bedroom and is suitable for wheelchair users should it be required) and a large well lit open plan kitchen with extended dining area which is comprehensively stocked crockery, pots, pans and utensils.
Leading directly from the kitchen through double doors is a more formal dining room which is light and airy, with large panel windows and outside access. At the end of one wing there is a games room with table tennis and darts, as well as some outdoor games. Adjacent is the 'garden wing' with large French doors and chairs and tables which can be used outside. Far reaching lawns afford guests a real feeling of space and privacy and are as suitable for peaceful strolls as they are for energetic games of football! The beach is accessible by farm track and is a twenty minute walk from the house. For some more challenging walking trails and activities, head 20 miles north to the Galloway Hills which provide walking for all levels as well as world class mountain biking. The property has direct access to 20 kilometers of new cycling/walking track, situated on the farm in a coastal location.
Don't miss out on the nearby spacious sands of Monrieth, Garlieston and Luce Bay beaches. For those looking for culture the Royal Burgh of Whithorn is home to a fine little museum, a recently constructed Iron Age roundhouse and the mediaeval remains of St Ninian's Priory. Wigtown, one of Scotland's book towns and home to a ten day annual book festival is a twenty minute drive away. The Machars and Rhins of Galloway boast fine gardens and historic sites which include the 75 acre Castle Kennedy Gardens, the Aldouran Wetland, Glenwhan Gardens and Logan Botanic Gardens. Marl House is the perfect location in which to spend your holiday break.

The area of Whithorn is rich in history and is also home to a medieval priory and an archaeological site. Logan Botanic Gardens, the Aldouran Wetland and the gardens of Castle Kennedy are all a must see. To the north of the Machars are the Galloway Hills, offering walking to all levels as well as mountain biking.

‘We stayed at the property recently and had the most fantastic experience. Set in a remote and idyllic location surrounded by greenery, the property had everything we needed and so much more. Extremely spacious for 8 of us, comfortable and warm, the house had a homely comforting vibe. Excellent for a group of friends or large families with plenty to keep you entertained, including table tennis, games, books, outdoor sports including a football pitch at the back of the garden. The stunning garden seemed to never end and was beautifully maintained. The kitchen is the main hub of the house and had everything we needed including 2 dishwashers, 2 washing machines, 2 dryers, 2 microwaves. Although initially daunting, the AGA stove and oven (which is on 24/7), was easy to use and fortunately for us, we had a chef in our party who enjoyed cooking us feasts every day. It was nice to have the option of using a normal cooker and oven too. We arrived at the property and noticed a generous hamper with essentials, which was a nice touch, and the owner Emily was a fantastic host, very pleasant and helpful and greeted us on arrival with ample logs for the wood fire. We knew she was only a phone call away if we needed anything which was reassuring. The only minor niggles about our stay were the slow Wi-Fi, which is a pain if you enjoy streaming live sports and the TV’s in both the living room and games room could perhaps be upgraded. Overall, we had an amazing time at Marl House, from the moment we arrived till the end of our stay. The property and the surrounding areas are immaculate, and we would love to come back again in the future one day. Zak and friends Thank you.’

‘Stayed here as part of a family gathering in September 2021. The location is very out of the way but access is good and the postcode took us straight to the property. The local tracks provided ample quiet space to walk the dog and the gardens are excellent for family games and running around with children. It would be nice if the gardens were secured at the side of the property and the gap on to the track at the top. The property is very impressive with a maze of rooms and facilities for you to make use of. The kitchen is very well equipped but bizarrely has an aga running constantly making it very warm in there and dangerous with small children in the property. The bedrooms are all mixed, we stayed in one of the wings that were more modern build and although comfortable enough, when you look at the details they are somewhat shoddy, some popped screw heads, badly repainted sections and lights that are largely useless, especially if you want to use the mirror in the bathroom. Shower facilities are lacking, the wet room was great but shared among everyone in the house was a problem. Although Wi-Fi is advertised it’s largely focused on one or two rooms and isn’t very quick at all, you would struggle to work from here if required and for something charging so much a week I was hoping for better. Those hoping to have kids stream or game to keep them entertained won’t want to rely on this. 4G signal is very poor inside the property. One positive for those with young children is the toy room which had a great supply of toys to keep my niece entertained. The table tennis is also a great way to help pass the time. Would be great to set the toy room up with a bigger screen to be able to close it up and have a film night or similar. Local facilities are very basic, there are small shops in Whithorn and Port William that can supply most things for you if required. Overall a lovely place for a short break but expect to be very isolated.’

‘Marl House is just wonderful. We were lucky enough to stay here with friends. A group of 6 adults and 7 children which the house absorbed very well. The house is large and very well equipped whilst maintaining a cosy and homely vibe. The views are stunning and the surrounding grounds beautiful - just perfect for children to safely explore and run around. There are many various dining spots inside and out which boast stunning views and its very peaceful at night. I can highly recommend a stay here- so relaxing!’

‘Marl House was utterly amazing. Had everything you needed and decorated to such a high standard. It really is a very special Place to visit and seems to have a different climate to the rest of Scotland- felt like the south of France. Bbq, beach, sport, canoeing, the list goes on. Will definitely be back. Thank you’
