Llevant Beach is located close to the heart of town and is an easy walk from many Salou holiday rentals. It boasts clear shallow water and a long, wide expanse of sand, as well as children's playgrounds and areas where beach activities such as paddle boats and water bananas can be enjoyed. Other popular family beaches close to Salou are Capellans Beach and Ponent Beach. Slightly further afield, small picturesque coves such as Cala Font and Cala Penya Tallada offer a more intimate alternative to these larger beaches.
For many visitors to the Costa Daurada, family holidays in Salou are synonymous with the town's amusement parks. The most well-known of these is PortAventura World, a massive leisure park that features crazy rides, waterslides, live shows, and much more. Another option for young thrill-seekers is Karting Salou, where the attractions include go-karting, a bungee rocket, and an amusement arcade.
Meandering along the coastline from the Pilon monument, in the heart of town, to Cape Salou lighthouse, the Cami De Ronda walking trail offers spectacular views over the Balearic Sea and access to some of the picturesque coves that dot the coastline.
Situated approximately 7.5 miles (12 kilometres) northeast of Salou, young history enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Tarragona. The city boasts many Roman ruins, including the Tarragona Amphitheatre and remnants of its defensive walls, as well as an impressive archaeological museum.
A visit to one of the town's traditional festivals is a highlight of many family holidays in Salou. The annual Festa del Calamar, or Squid Festival, celebrates the town's fishing heritage, while the Procession of the Virgin is a traditional religious parade that begins at the church of Santa Maria del Mar. Salou's Winter Festival and its Golden Nights, held during summer, are also vibrant family-friendly events which include cultural performances and children's entertainment.
