What to do in San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the most convenient cities in the US to visit. It is relatively small (10km2) and is known for its tolerant and friendly visitors. You can see everything the city has to offer in about a day - very convenient if you want to see other parts of California on the West Coast. What is there to do in San Francisco? We recommend visiting the Fisherman's Wharf and especially Pier 39 where a colony of sea lions live! They have been living on the pier since the 1980s and by now there are more than 1,000 of them! After visiting the Wharf, head down nearby Stockton Street to North Beach, the Bohemian area of town. Enjoy the eateries, but expect long queues. It's always useful to get an overview of the city you're visiting, and San Francisco's Coit Tower is the ideal place for that. From here you have a grandiose view of the city, sea and Golden Gate Bridge. Don't forget to check out the murals in the tower, which were painted in a social realist style in 1933. Coit Tower is located on the Telegraph Hill. Descend the hill too via the 400 steps because along the way you will see some beautiful houses and well kept gardens. You might even see wild parrots! You can also go via Lombard Street - one of the world's most winding streets. It is paved with red bricks and has 8 curves - better to walk on than drive on! Another typical San Francisco attraction is the tram. You pay only $6 for a ride - take the most famous line, from Steep Powell Street to Hyde and Beach, near Embarcadero. The Castro District is one of the city's most popular neighborhoods - look for the Castro Theater, an iconic old theater where you can see movie classics. San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest in the world and the city has the largest population of Chinese outside of China. Learn about Chinese history here, explore interesting stores and try the area's best restaurants. We recommend going to Capital Restaurant as the food there is tasty and not too expensive.
A visit to San Francisco would not be complete without and visit to Alcatraz, the most infamous prison in the world. To reach the island on which the prison sits, you must take the boat - book your tickets well in advance, as the boats fill up quickly during peak season. There are guided tours seven days a week - we really liked the Alcatraz Night Tour because it allows you to see the prison at night as well. You get an audio tour with atmospheric sound effects to keep the excitement of the visit high! You'll learn a lot about the prison, including some sensational escape stories.
Travel
San Francisco International Airport is about 12 miles from the city center. We recommend taking public transportation and there are plenty of options to and from the airport. The BART high-speed train connects the airport to the city and there are also SAMTRAM buses that run to the city. The trip from San Francisco Airport to downtown takes about 20 minutes. You get around San Francisco quite easily. Of course, you have to use the famous streetcar lines and you will see a lot of the city during a ride. San Francisco is known as one of the easiest cities to find your way around and we are sure you won't get lost. There are several ferries that operate in the bay and different parts of the bay - views of the city from the sea are also very interesting. If you are planning to vacation in California, San Francisco is an excellent starting point. The world-famous Yosemite National Park lies east of the city and is just under 4 hours away. The Big Sur National Park, an overwhelming area full of natural splendor lies south of the city.Information about holiday rentals in San Francisco
