Dog-Friendly Holidays in Somerset

Somerset is filled with iconic tourist attractions, including Stonehenge and the ancient town of Bath. Its magnificent coastline adds to its allure. Careful planning will ensure that any traveller and their dog can enjoy a visit to this county together.
5 Dog-Friendly Activities in Somerset

5 Dog-Friendly Activities in Somerset

Since many of the ancient ruins and buildings are official heritage sites, they are carefully conserved and have strict rules about animals, which are worth checking in advance. However, there are many resorts and attractions that welcome dogs, some of which can be found in the following list.

  1. Glastonbury Abbey

The legendary and ancient Abbey, alleged burial place of King Arthur, and the location of the earliest emergence of Christianity in England, is situated in 36 acres of parkland. Dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on short leads and under their owners' control. Watering points are provided for dogs

  2. Cheddar Caves and Gorge

Cheddar Gorge and the Cheddar Caves are situated in the Mendip mountains outside of Cheddar. Britain's oldest complete skeleton was found here; the skeleton is estimated to be about 9000 years old. The spectacular natural phenomena and the interesting, winding trails, make for an adventurous day out in nature, a treat for active dogs. The Black Dog Saloon in Cheddar is a wild-west-themed pub run by a dog-loving family and is friendly and relaxed. The pub is known for its good food and for its very reasonably priced drinks. This might be a great place for travellers and their dogs to relax and refresh after a hard walk in the Cheddar Gorge!

  3. Coates English Willow Visitors Centre

This centre is in the rural village of Stoke St Gregory. It showcases the 200-year old willow industry, with its products ranging from baskets to furniture, and even coffins. Dogs are welcome to enjoy the entire centre and the surrounding willow farm and wetlands with their owners, as long as they are kept on leads.

  4. Brean Beach

Brean Beach is two miles from Weston-super-Mare. The beach boasts 7 miles of sand - both flat sand and dunes. This is one of the longest stretches of sand in Europe and is a dog paradise all year round. It is an exceptionally popular destination for dog lovers and their pets.

  5. West Somerset Railway, Bishops Lydeard to Minehead (and back)

Journeys on this railway's trips have two tickets: one for people and one for dogs. Staff welcome and fuss over dogs on the trains (as long as they stay on the floor)! The journey, each way, covers 20 miles, allowing the traveller plenty of time to explore. The route passes through 10 stations in the beautiful Somerset countryside and sports a view of Wales from the Bristol Channel.
