Holidays in Spain in August

Located in northern Spain, these two cities are great places to visit if you want to escape the soaring temperatures in the south of Spain. Aste Nagusia, or 'Big Week', is a series of events and celebrations in the Basque Country in August, with fireworks and traditional dancing. Both Bilbao and San Sebastián have historic churches and palaces to visit.

Known for its Tomatina festival, where runners are pelted with tomatoes, Valencia is a must-see during August holidays. If you're feeling brave, participate in the festival. Alternatively, visit the strikingly futuristic science and art museums and the city's enormous oceanarium.

No tour of Spain is complete without a trip to magical Barcelona. It's easy to spend entire days just taking in the vibrant streets lined with Gaudi's fairytale architecture and street art. Head to the beach in the morning and escape the midday sun by visiting Gaudi's cathedral, La Sagrada Familia. There are also beach parties held every weekend.

One for nature lovers, this scenic national park has wonderful spots for walking and cycling. The weather in August is usually warm but not too hot, and there are dozens of beaches lining the coast. The food is delicious, too, with traditional Spanish dishes such as paella and croquettes.
