Skiing Holidays in Sweden

Sweden is an underrated country for a skiing holiday. Away from the popularity of the resorts in the Alps, Sweden's ski resorts have a more laid-back feel, with family-friendly runs and good-quality snow.

The Top 5 Ski Resorts In Sweden

The Top 5 Ski Resorts In Sweden

There are ski resorts all over Sweden, for alpine skiing, cross country skiing, and snowboarding. Central Sweden is home to the best-known and most popular resorts, but it's worth venturing further north to find ski slopes that are off the beaten track.

  1. Åre

This is the most visited resort in Sweden, and is regularly voted the best in the country. There are 49 lifts that take you up to 89 slopes across the areas of Duved, Åre Village, and Åre Björnen. Duved is best for beginners and intermediate skiers, and there are ski schools in the area that are on-hand to teach you the basics. There are lots of other things to see and do in the area, such as visiting the majestic Lake Åresjön or eating out at one of the many slope-side restaurants that serve hearty portions of traditional Swedish dishes.

  2. Riksgränsen

Riksgränsen is the most northerly ski resort in Sweden, with almost no trees to obscure the stunning views. It's best for advanced skiers, as lots of the slopes are off-piste, and due to it being so far north there is year-round snow, so you can ski throughout the winter and summer.

  3. Hemavan and Tärnaby

These two ski resorts are close to one another and are also in the north of Sweden, so they have guaranteed snow throughout the ski season. Together they have over 80 slopes with 15 lifts, and cater to all ages and abilities. Due to the northern location, you might get to experience some of the area's unusual weather conditions, including the midnight sun in the summer, when the sun blazes for 24 hours a day. In the winter, if you're lucky, you might see the famous Aurora Borealis.

  4. Sälen

Located in south-central Sweden and benefitting from more temperate weather, Sälen is a good choice for families. It consists of four areas - Hundfjället, Lindvallen, Tandådalen, and Högfjället - with over 100 slopes. There are loads of fun activities for families and kids, such as dog sledding, snowmobile tours, indoor surfing, shops, and restaurants.

  5. Kläppen

A good choice for all abilities, Kläppen is now much more accessible thanks to the new airport at Sälen-Trysil. It has 37 slopes with 21 lifts, with the highest peak of 655 metres. The resort has a good range of accommodation, from budget-friendly to luxury, and throughout the year they offer discounts and offers on accommodation and ski pass prices. There are several restaurants in the resort, as well as a bakery, ski shop, and grocery store.
