The Gotthard dates back to the 13th century, when locals used it as a mule track. It is now home to the longest railway tunnel, which extends for 57.1 km. There is also the Gotthard Road tunnel that spans 16 km and separates the Italian region from the German-speaking parts of Switzerland. Instead of using the road tunnel, head over to the mountain pass, which will take longer, but offers picturesque views. You can use the Tremola Pass or the new pass: both routes have spectacular views, but the Tremola Pass is a bumpy ride due to the uneven cobblestone. While travelling via the new pass, you will enjoy the surrounding scenery of the Swiss Alps.
This is arguably the most famous mountain pass in the European Alps, thanks to its majestic scenery. You can join the motorists who travel the route for its impressive views, or soak in its rich history. Don't pass up the chance to learn about the St. Bernard dogs! Visit the hospice grounds, where monks breed this iconic breed. Visitors can access the museum at the Col Du Grand St. Bernard. Dog lovers will enjoy this place as you can walk with the dogs! Before you leave, be sure to hop back and forth between Italy and Switzerland while at the border. It's a memorable experience.
The legendary Furka Pass was featured in the 1964 James Bond Film, and everybody wanted to experience the scenic landscapes. Close to six decades later, the view is just as impressive, and makes for an exhilarating drive through the Swiss Alps. The pass connects Andermatt with Gletsch and opens from June to mid-October. The drive offers tons of photo opportunities, as well as the unique mountain panorama. You can also hike, climb, ski or drive up the perfectly surfaced road. This part of the climb isn't as steep as the first, but the high elevations, steep grades, and twisty corners offer awe-inspiring views. It has scary but exhilarating switchbacks. You can book a tour to walk through the Rhone Glacier, which is the source of Rhone River. While all this is amazing, the timing has to be perfect as weather changes can make the conditions dangerous.
