We stayed for two nights to go to the Sydney NYE fireworks. The pluses - clean bathrooms and surrounds, plentiful hot water, comfortable bed, shared kitchen, helpful staff and free parking. The minuses - public transport links within North Sydney itself are poor, it took 2.5 hours by public transport to travel 6.5 kilometres from near Taroonza zoo on the way back from the fireworks. The cost - there was a 100 percent markup on the tariff because we were there for NYE but this is standard for Sydney at that time of year.

Sydney is well known for its amazing landmarks and sights. If you book accommodation in central Sydney you can explore Sydney and its sights with ease on a daily basis. Things to see include the colossal Sydney Opera House, which is an iconic Australian performing arts venue. With its sweeping white architecture, this structure is recognised around the world. What is there to do in Sydney?

Sydney receives 10 million visitors a year who flock to the city's beautiful beaches and attractions. First-time visitors will find the bays and headlands impressive, so perhaps the best way to start your stay in Sydney is to climb to the top of the Sydney Tower. From the observation deck at 300m high, you'll have a great view of the entire city and surrounding land. Once you have an overview and enjoyed the amazing view from Sidney Tower, head to the Circular Quay, Sydney's main harbor where you will find the city's main attractions Sydney Opera House, Luna Park and Sydney Harvour Bridge. You will probably be familiar with Sydney Harbour, but it is always impressive to see these attractions in real life. The Sydney Opera House, designed by a Danish architect, is an impressive architectural feat and its imitation of white sails fits perfectly into the skyline. The building is open to visitors and you can learn all about it during the hour-long tour. Behind the Opera House you will find the Royal Botanical Gardens and Sydney Domain. The botanical gardens are beautiful and you can enjoy walking around. The Domain is a large park and you can enjoy a view of the Sydney skyline. Also nearby is the Government House where the governor of New South Wales lives and the ,strong>Art Gallery of New South Wales, which features Australian, Asian and European art. On the left side of Circular Quay is another iconic Sydney landmark- the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The bridge is also called the "coat hanger" and this startling piece of design is one of Sydney's most beloved attractions. If you are not afraid of heights, get into a rig and take a tour of the top of the bridge.

Getting out in Sydney

Sydeny is known for its fantastic nightlife and there are plenty of interesting areas in the city. Most of the bars were called "hotels," because of the old tradition that someone who had a glass was also offered a room. The neighborhoods Woolloomooloo and The Rocks have many good pubs and bars. Live music is important and you will find bars with rock, jazz and pop performances. Bondi Beach has excellent beach bars from where you can enjoy the sea views with a cocktail in your hand. Darling Harbour, an old marshalling yard that has been renovated and houses great bars and restaurants. The nightlife there is not only excellent - some of Australia's best museums can be found there. Visit the National Maritime Museum for a look at the history of shipping in this area and how important it has been to the development of the Australian economy. The Powerhouse Museum has a major exhibition on science and design. The museum is an ode to steam, space and science and it for both children and adults a fun experience.
