City Breaks in Whitby: Top Holiday Lettings
Top Must-Sees During Your Whitby City Break
Whitby has stood the test of time, enduring as a popular holiday destination thanks in part to its ability to please all ages. From fantastic family suppers to walks along the beach, a weekend break in Whitby means fun for both you and your children.
1. Climb 199 steps to heaven
The 199 steps are one of Whitby's most iconic attractions. It’s up for debate whether there are in fact 198 or 199 steps but walkers sure agree on one thing—it’s a tiring trek up! The exceptional view of St Mary’s Church and beyond across the bay makes the arduous walk worth it.
2. Eat kippers
No smell conjures up Whitby quite like the whiff of smoked kippers. Located at the end of Henrietta Street, Fortune's is the longest serving smokehouse in Whitby, having been established in 1872! There's no better place to pick up some hearty breakfast before a walk on the beach.
3. See the Whale Bone Arch
A nod to Whitby’s past as a whaling industry hub, the arch symbolises a time when whalers would erect whale bones to signal that they had survived a hunt. Beside the arch is a statue of the great explorer, Captain Cook, who was once a Whitby resident.
4. Hunt for fossils on Saltwick Bay
This rocky and rugged bay to the east of Whitby offers a treasure trove of opportunities for the budding geologist. It’s also a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and stargaze by night.
