Known locally as Whitby West, this large stone pier is home to a good variety of fish species. Winters can be harsh in Whitby, so you'll want to pack lots of warm, waterproof gear, but it's worth it for the large cod that can be caught from the pier throughout the colder months. In the summer you'll find mackerel, pollock, and bass.
This beautiful stretch of sand is also great for fishing. Coalfish and flounder can be caught in the summer months, as well as cod throughout the winter. The tide at Sandsend can come in quickly so make sure you pay attention to the water levels.
There are plenty of good fishing spots up and down the River Esk, including Danby, Egton Bridge, and Ruswarp. The river contains salmon, brown trout and sea trout, and in some places, permits may be needed which can be purchased locally. There are also a lot of inviting pubs on the river that dish up fresh seafood caught from the local shore.
